The University of Florence is one of the most important and influential centre for research and higher training in Italy, with 1,800 lecturers and internal research staff, 1,600 technical and administrative staff, and over 1,600 research assistants and doctoral students. It is organised in 10 Schools and 24 Departments, with a population of about 51,000 enrolled students, one-fourth of which come from outside of Tuscany.

The origins of the University of Florence date back to the Studium Generale set up by the Florentine Republic in 1321. The subjects taught were Civil and Canon Law, Literature, Medicine. There have been illustrious scholars such as Giovanni Boccaccio, who lectured on the Divina Commedia.

The Master’s programme in Labour Sciences and Human Resources Management (LS-HRM) is a one-year postgraduate course aimed to educate human resources, industrial relations and employment experts. Established in 1994 within the Department of Social and Political Sciences (DSPS), as the European Master in Labour Sciences, in 2015 it has renewed its courses after the merger with the Master in Human Resources Development and Banking and Insurance Companies Management of the Department of Economics (DISEI). It offers a specialized multidisciplinary training programme, which combines elements of political science, economics and law, and a high-quality internship in one of the partner companies. The students will be prepared to work in public and private organisations, such as international and European enterprises, SMEs, trade unions and public administrations.
